ENGLAND SECURE QUALIFICATION INTO LAST 16 AT WORLDS
Another emphatic win from brother and sister duo Ben and Anna Fowler saw Team England secure their qualification spot into the last 16 with a game to spare at the World Mixed Doubles Championships in Stavanger, in Norway.
In their penultimate round robin match that lasted only six ends, Team Fowler exerted their dominance in the game from the outset, securing a four at the first end and steals of two at both of the next to lead 6-0 after the third end. Despite Kazakhstan narrowing that margin when they claimed a four to close within two shots, the Fowlers extended their advantage with a three at the fifth end and Sitora Alliyarova and Abylaikhan Zhuzbay’s single at the last wrapped up the 11-5 win for the English pair.
Maintaining their 100% record in the tournament, Team Fowler’s results in the round robin cannot be matched by any of their opponents in their group, regardless of the outcome of their final game against Finland tomorrow.
Speaking after the team’s impressive sixth consecutive win at Sormarka Arena, Anna Fowler said: “It was a really big win for us, we knew they were on a good record in our group so it was important for us to go out there and show what we are about and get the win on the board in our second to last round robin outing.
“The scoreline might have suggested it was comfortable win, but we still had to work hard for it and we had a really good couple of ends to start with, which put us ahead and that is what you always want. But we then found the ice a little bit different to the other sessions, so we did have a few struggles, but managed to finish the game in six ends,” she said.
will now approach our final game against Finland the same way as we have every other game this week. We want to be our best out there and we want to make sure we bring our absolute A game before we head into the final 16,” she added.
Hungary and Switzerland, who are both in group B, have also secured their qualification into the final 16.
